The city prefers to be called the “Town of Flower Mound” instead of the “City of Flower Mound”. The first part of the name, “flower”, came from the southwest part of town where there was 12.5 acres of land filled with wild flowers while the second part, “mound”, was derived from the ceremonial place of the Wichita Indians. Flower Mound shows its love for its cultural roots by protecting itself from common practices of modernization. This, however, does not mean that development cannot take place. Rather, the town has ordinances which require strict control on architectural elements so that the original vision and beauty of the architecture can be preserved.

The location is very convenient for home owners due to its proximity to the DFW International Airport and the Metroplex at large. Money Magazine also recognized it as the “Number 1 Place to Live in Texas”. Despite of its growth and economic development, Flower Mound remains to be a town with a low cost of living. BusinessWeek.com tagged it as one of the “Top 25 Best Affordable U.S. Suburbs”.
